First Aid at Work in Blackpool
First Aid at Work training in Blackpool prepares employees to respond confidently when a colleague, customer or visitor becomes ill or injured. In a serious emergency, the actions taken during the first few minutes can make a critical difference. Knowing how to assess a casualty, perform CPR and use an AED could help give someone the best possible chance of survival while the emergency services are on their way.
Blackpool’s economy includes a large number of public-facing and seasonal workplaces, from hotels, restaurants, entertainment venues and visitor attractions to shops, offices, schools, care settings, construction sites and industrial businesses. Each environment presents different risks, so Cataldo Training delivers practical, engaging courses that prepare employees for emergencies relevant to their workplace.
Under the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, employers must provide adequate and appropriate first-aid equipment, facilities and personnel. The arrangements required by your Blackpool workplace should be determined through a first-aid needs assessment. This should consider workplace hazards, employee numbers, seasonal staffing, shift patterns, lone workers, previous incidents and proximity to emergency medical services.
Depending on the findings of your assessment, your organisation may require an appointed person, employees trained in Emergency First Aid at Work or the more comprehensive First Aid at Work qualification. We can help you choose the most appropriate course for your workforce, working environment and level of risk.

Which First Aid at Work course does my business need?
The right course depends on your First Aid needs assessment, not simply the number of employees. Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) provides essential emergency response skills. First Aid at Work covers a broader range of injuries and illnesses. Your workplace risks, staff arrangements and location should guide the final decision.
The Health and Safety Executive advises employers to use their First Aid needs assessment to decide:
- Whether trained first aiders are required.
- What level of training is appropriate.
- How many people should receive training.
- How first-aid cover will remain available whenever people are at work.
What Simon considers before recommending first-aid training
Choosing a course should involve more than comparing course lengths. Important considerations include:
- The work being carried out and the likelihood of injury or sudden illness.
- Hazards such as machinery, vehicles, chemicals, manual handling or working at height.
- The number of employees and how they are divided across shifts.
- Holiday, sickness and unexpected absence cover.
- Lone workers, travelling employees and remote locations.
- The size and layout of the workplace.
- How quickly emergency medical assistance could reach the site.
- Previous accidents, incidents or cases of sudden illness.
- Visitors, customers, contractors or members of the public who may also need help.
- Existing first-aid qualifications and their expiry dates.
Simon’s practical view
“Our current pricings are per course and not per candidate. Therefore, we have seen a significant number of clients place as many employees on the course as their availability allows (up to a maximum of 12) This not only ensures cost effectiveness but means a workplace has a higher availability of trained and qualified First Aiders.
We recently had a client who decided that in addition to the required number of First Aiders, they wished to give every employee at least a little training in CPR and Defib usage. We created a rolling training package to facilitate this – SEE BESPOKE AMAZON. This was not about certificates but in giving everyone at the site a chance to learn some life-saving skills – skills that can be taken out of the workplace and into everyday life.”

How many people do we need qualified in First Aid at our Blackpool Business?

Attendees Often Ask – Can I get sued if I break somebody’s rib doing CPR?
Provided you act in good faith to save a life, it is highly unlikely you will be successfully sued for breaking a rib during CPR. Breaking ribs is an expected complication of effective chest compressions. The SARAH Act (Social Action, Responsibility and Heroism Act 2015) is a UK law designed to protect those administering life-saving treatment from litigation. It must be stressed that this law assumes that any First Aiders act responsibly.
Ultimately, the Act does not provide definite immunity, as a court of law will always consider the context of a good deed.

Why is first aid at work important?
First and foremost, having a specified number of First Aid at Work qualified persons is a legal requirement for employers. It saves lives and can prevent injuries and illnesses from worsening. Trained and competent First Aiders can contribute to an overall culture of well-being and safety in a workplace, which can reduce accidents.

Is CPR always 30 compressions to 2 breaths?
For adult patients who are unresponsive and not breathing, a ratio of 2 rescue breaths to 30 chest compressions ensures that some oxygen is delivered to the lungs and that oxygen is carried via the blood to keep the organs of the body alive. Should the First Aider not wish to perform rescue breaths, then ‘continuous’ compressions are strongly encouraged. This ensures enough pressure to be maintained to circulate oxygen-rich blood in lieu of the heart not beating as it should.

What are the 5 aims of first aid?
PRESERVE LIFE – If nothing else achieved, keeping someone alive until professional medical helps arrives is the primary aim of First Aid.
PREVENT WORSENING – An example would be controlling a bleed and stopping a casualty from loosing any further blood from their body.
PROMOTE RECOVERY – By applying a correct dressing for example, this will minimise the risk of infection causing further complications.
PROTECT THE UNCOSCIOUS – By being attentive to surrounding dangers and monitoring the casualty’s vital signs such as breathing and pulse, a First Aider can make sure that they can be in the best position to provide aid.
PROVIDE COMFORT – A First Aider can reduce the pain and anxiety of a casualty by, for example, reassuring them that they are in safe hands.
What are the ABCs of first aid?
AIRWAY – The First Aider should ensure that the casualty either has an airway or take steps to create this. This allows effective breathing or ventilation to occur.
BREATHING – If a casualty is not breathing, it is imperative to initiate CPR.
CPR – If a casualty is unresponsive and not breathing, CPR must be started immediately to give them the best possible chance of survival and recovery.
