Welcome to First Aid at Work delivered by Simon Cataldo MIFSM

ACCREDITED COURSE

First Aid at Work

First and foremost, First Aid Training can greatly contribute to saving a life, not just at the workplace but anywhere. It can give you confidence and the ability to react immediately to an accident, illness or injury. Timely intervention of CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) combined with the use of an AED has been proven to make the difference many times. Rapid reaction not only saves lives but can reduce the recovery time of the patient. In the case of a member of staff, they will be back to work quicker, reducing the impact on the business.

It is a legal requirement for employers to provide a Workplace First Aider in the event of illness or injury. Our courses are accredited and fully align with the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, ensuring candidates are fully equipped with the knowledge and skills to take on this role. A workplace’s Risk Assessment will define the facility’s hazard level as LOW or HIGHER risk. Combined with the number of employees, this will also determine the number of First Aid Trained personnel required.

All courses are compliant with current UK and European Resuscitation guidelines and accepted practice.

Which First Aid at Work course does my business need?

The right course depends on your First Aid needs assessment, not simply the number of employees. Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW) provides essential emergency response skills. First Aid at Work covers a broader range of injuries and illnesses. Your workplace risks, staff arrangements and location should guide the final decision.

The Health and Safety Executive advises employers to use their First Aid needs assessment to decide:

  • Whether trained first aiders are required.
  • What level of training is appropriate.
  • How many people should receive training.
  • How first-aid cover will remain available whenever people are at work.

What Simon considers before recommending first-aid training

Choosing a course should involve more than comparing course lengths. Important considerations include:

  • The work being carried out and the likelihood of injury or sudden illness.
  • Hazards such as machinery, vehicles, chemicals, manual handling or working at height.
  • The number of employees and how they are divided across shifts.
  • Holiday, sickness and unexpected absence cover.
  • Lone workers, travelling employees and remote locations.
  • The size and layout of the workplace.
  • How quickly emergency medical assistance could reach the site.
  • Previous accidents, incidents or cases of sudden illness.
  • Visitors, customers, contractors or members of the public who may also need help.
  • Existing first-aid qualifications and their expiry dates.

Simon’s practical view

“Our current pricings are per course and not per candidate. Therefore, we have seen a significant number of clients place as many employees on the course as their availability allows (up to a maximum of 12) This not only ensures cost effectiveness but means a workplace has a higher availability of trained and qualified First Aiders.

We recently had a client who decided that in addition to the required number of First Aiders, they wished to give every employee at least a little training in CPR and Defib usage. We created a rolling training package to facilitate this – SEE BESPOKE AMAZON. This was not about certificates but in giving everyone at the site a chance to learn some life-saving skills – skills that can be taken out of the workplace and into everyday life.”

First Aid Accredited Courses

If you have completed a First Aid needs Risk Assessment but remain unsure whether EFAW or FAW is the right option, contact Cataldo Training.

We can discuss your workplace, risks and training requirements with you.

Existing First Aiders, whom are in possession of a current FAW Certificate, can undertake the First Aid at Work Requalification FAW (R) which is delivered over 2 days.

For all First Aiders, whom currently are in possession of a valid FAW or EFAW Certificate, it is advisable to undergo annual refresher training. Although not mandatory, the AFAR Annual First Aid Refresher course is a valuable way to keep skills fresh and for any updates in guidance or procedures.

A Paediatric First Aid Certificate is a legal requirement for all early years staff, childminders and nursery workers under the UK Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework. Cataldo Training offers the Emergency Paediatric First Aid (EPFA) and the Paediatric First Aid (PFA) courses.

The EPA is delivered in one day over 6 hours.

The PFA is delivered in two days over 12 hours. The PFA also gives you an option of Blended Learning. Candidates are required to enrol onto an online package and complete theory prior to attending a face to face one day course. This day consolidates the online learning and focuses on the practical elements.
