Bespoke Training Case Study: Amazon

Cataldo Training was approached by Amazon to provide refresher first aid training for as many staff as possible during a busy working day. The aim was not to replace existing First Aid at Work certificates, but to give employees the opportunity to refresh essential life-saving skills through short, practical and accessible training.

The challenge was to deliver meaningful first aid instruction to a large workforce while keeping disruption to an absolute minimum. With staff needing to remain close to their workstations and break times limited, the training had to be flexible, engaging and easy for employees to take part in at their own pace.

To meet this need, Cataldo Training created a bespoke “come and have a go” first aid training area positioned near the canteen facilities. Equipped with CPR manikins, defibrillators, bandages and basic first aid equipment, the space allowed staff to drop in during breaks and receive practical instruction from a trainer throughout the day.

The sessions were delivered successfully as part of Amazon’s Safety Week, giving large numbers of staff the chance to build confidence in key first aid skills without affecting workplace productivity. The success of the programme has since helped demonstrate the value of flexible, bite-sized first aid training for large workplaces.

Requirements

Amazon initially approached us for some refresher First Aid training that could be delivered to as many staff as possible. This would not replace existing First Aid at Work Certificates, but it would ensure that all available staff are given an opportunity to receive some ‘bite size’ training in the essentials.

The challenge

The main challenge would be to provide short sessions focusing on the fundamental skills for up to 1000 people in a working day, limiting the amount of time staff would be away from their respective work stations.

Bespoke solution

We suggested to Amazon that we set up a designated area just next to the canteen facilities, where a Trainer would be for the whole day and a space just enough to have some CPR training manikins and Defibrillators, bandages and basic First Aid equipment. As all staff would use this thoroughfare during their break-times, it would act as a ‘come and have a go’ area where they could spend as little time or indeed as long as they could. The Trainer would be present to offer practical instruction as required.

Services provided

We provided a rolling service of First Aid instruction and equipment which ensured that the maximum number of staff could gain valuable life-saving skills, in a short time and without adversely affecting their workplace roles and productivity.

Output and outcomes:

The session was highly successful and feedback was great. Two separate sessions were delivered during a scheduled Safety Week to ensure all available staff could get involved.

The main outcome being that this kind of ‘have a go’ day is now a regular enquiry for us to provide to other clients.

Having successfully demonstrated it’s worth at a workplace as large as Amazon, we are confident that these sessions will be increasing in popularity.
