Bespoke Training Case Study: SportsCool Durham

Cataldo Training was approached to support a wider programme of holiday club activity sessions across schools and venues in County Durham. The aim was to introduce basic first aid skills to primary-aged children in a way that was safe, practical, engaging and easy to understand.

The sessions needed to be suitable for children aged 4–11 and designed to fit within a busy holiday club environment alongside sporting and activity-based provision. With limited time available, the focus was on creating short, interactive first aid taster sessions that would give children the confidence to take part, learn key life-saving principles and enjoy the experience.

Working closely with the client, Cataldo Training developed a bespoke programme that used clear demonstrations, hands-on activities and age-appropriate teaching methods. The result was a series of fun, practical sessions delivered across five schools in the Durham area, helping children build awareness of first aid, CPR and emergency response in a simple and memorable way.

Requirements

A client approached Cataldo Training to explore the possibility of introducing basic first aid skills to children aged 4–11. The training needed to form part of a wider programme of holiday club activity sessions across schools and venues in County Durham. The sessions had to be short, age-appropriate, practical, engaging and fun.

The challenge

The challenge was to take important life-saving skills and present them in a way that younger children could understand, remember and confidently take part in. The training also needed to fit around a busy holiday club environment and sit alongside sporting activities.

Bespoke solution

Cataldo Training worked with the client to design a series of first aid taster sessions suitable for primary-aged children. The programme focused on simple, practical learning, using clear demonstrations and age-appropriate activities to help children understand key first aid principles.

Services provided

Initial consultation, bespoke session planning, age-appropriate first aid content, practical demonstrations, hands-on learner activities, delivery across summer holiday club sessions, and post-session feedback/review.

Output and outcomes:

The sessions were delivered at 5 separate schools across the Durham area on 5 separate days.

There were approximately 50 children at each venue aged 4 – 11 years old and the sessions were split into groups of 8 – 10 children and lasting around 45 minutes. This, we found, was the ideal timings.

The outcome was a Business Case being drafted by us to push for mandatory CPR training in schools and also future bookings.

Client Review:

We had the pleasure of working with Cataldo Fire and Safety Training, specifically Simon Cataldo, to deliver first aid training to our primary-aged children during our summer holiday clubs. Simon was fantastic with the kids, breaking down complex concepts like CPR and defibrillator use into simple, easy-to-understand steps. His engaging teaching style encouraged everyone to participate in practical learning, making the sessions both fun and informative.

We highly recommend Cataldo Fire and Safety Training for any organisation looking to provide high-quality first aid training. Simon’s expertise and engaging teaching style make him an excellent instructor, and we look forward to working with them again in the future.
