How many Fire Marshals do we need at one time?

A commercial workplace should consult its Fire Risk Assessment (FRA) to determine how many Fire Marshals in your Washington business are required. In general terms, a low-risk workplace requires one Fire Marshal per 50 people. This should also consider the covering of holidays, sicknesses and other absences. The size of the building, usage and presence of vulnerable people may significantly increase the number of Fire Marshals and trained staff that are required.

Are Fire Marshals expected to tackle a workplace fire?

The role of a Fire Marshal is to ensure safe and orderly evacuation and raise the alarm in the event of a fire at your business in Washington. If they are suitably trained and confident to, they may tackle a very small fire in, for example, a small waste bin. However, they must never put themselves in any danger, as their role in assisting others is their primary objective.

Fire Warden Course Washington FAQS

What qualifications do fire wardens need?

Fire wardens do not usually need a separate legal licence or nationally prescribed qualification, but they do need adequate fire warden training that prepares them to carry out their role safely and confidently in their own workplace. In practice, that means the employer or responsible person must make sure the fire warden understands the site’s fire risks, alarm and evacuation procedures, escape routes, assembly points, and what to do if a fire breaks out. UK fire safety law places the duty on the responsible person to provide appropriate training for employees and to keep fire safety arrangements under review.

A recognised Fire Warden or Fire Marshal certificate is widely used by employers as evidence that the person has completed formal training. While the certificate itself is not the law, it is often the clearest way to show that a nominated member of staff has received structured instruction in fire safety and understands their duties. For most businesses, the real requirement is not just having paper proof, but making sure the training is relevant to the premises, the fire risk assessment, and the individual’s responsibilities.

Can fire warden training be done online?

Yes, fire warden training can be delivered online, in person, or through a blended format, provided the training is suitable for the workplace and gives staff the knowledge they need to act properly in an emergency. UK guidance focuses on adequate training, not one single delivery method. That means online learning can be useful for theory, such as understanding how fire starts, how fire spreads, legal duties, evacuation procedures, and the role of the responsible person and fire warden.

However, many employers still prefer face-to-face fire warden training because it usually gives delegates better engagement, clearer discussion around real workplace scenarios, and the chance to ask questions based on their own building, staff, and fire strategy. In-person training is especially valuable where practical elements are included, such as extinguisher awareness, evacuation leadership, sweep procedures, and decision-making under pressure. Official guidance also makes clear that people with no training should not be expected to tackle a fire, and that extinguishers should only be used by those who have been trained. That is why many businesses see classroom-based training as the strongest option for building real confidence, not just theoretical knowledge.

What do you do on a fire warden course?
A good fire warden course teaches delegates how to help prevent fires, how to support a safe evacuation, and how to carry out their fire safety responsibilities before, during, and after an emergency. Most courses begin with the fundamentals of fire safety, including the common causes of workplace fires, the fire triangle, how fire and smoke spread, and the importance of prevention, housekeeping, and hazard awareness. Delegates are then guided through the practical side of the role, including alarm procedures, escape routes, roll calls, assembly points, evacuation leadership, and how to assist with a calm and controlled response. A Fire Warden Course should also explain how the role fits into the wider fire safety system within the business. That includes understanding the employer’s fire risk assessment, recognising unsafe behaviour or blocked escape routes, reporting fire safety concerns, and knowing the limits of the role. Where practical training is included, delegates may also receive hands-on extinguisher instruction or live fire simulator experience, helping them understand when an extinguisher may be used and, just as importantly, when evacuation is the only safe option. This kind of practical learning is often what turns a fire warden from someone who has attended a course into someone who can respond confidently in a real incident.

Do fire warden certificates expire?
A fire warden certificate may not always show a formal expiry date, but that does not mean refresher training should be ignored. UK fire safety law requires training to be adequate and repeated when appropriate, including when staff first start work and when there are new or increased risks. Government guidance also says businesses should train staff, run at least one fire drill a year, and keep fire safety procedures up to date. In other words, the practical question is not whether the paper certificate has expired, but whether the person’s knowledge is still current and suitable for the workplace. In many workplaces, annual fire safety refresher training is the sensible standard, especially where staff turnover is high, the building layout is complex, the fire risk is greater, or site procedures have changed. Refresher training helps keep evacuation procedures fresh in people’s minds, reinforces good habits, and makes sure fire wardens are still confident in their role. Even where a training provider’s certificate does not technically expire, regular refresher training is strongly encouraged as good practice and is often expected by employers, insurers, and health and safety systems.
